Attributed to Philip Wickstead (1763-1786). Wickstead was a pupil of Zoffany.

This remained with the family until it was sold at Christie's, London, in 1973 ( - as by Wickstead, 6 April, 1973, Lot 108). She wears a pink dress and is set in a classical garden with her dog, a basket of flowers and a series of potted trees in the background. Her left arm gathering a floral bouquet and resting upon a pedestal supporting a classical figure. Oil on canvas. In giltwood frame.

Condition:  The canvas is lined. Overall the painting presents a charming image, with some thinness to the paint, most noticeably in the background. A tiny and minor area of paint loss is at the bottom of the skirt, right above her foot as is visible in the catalogue image. Other scattered, small specs of paint loss are throughout the edges, quite possibly due to old frame rubbing, as is visible along the edge of the left side, and on the bottom left quadrant. Inspection under UV is difficult to read probably due to the old varnish, but finely applied retouches of inpaint to the craquelure are visible, most prominently on the figure's face and chest. Other scattered thin strokes of retouching are along the left edge, particularly to the darker colors.
