Beginning in the 10th-century, there were a series of laws passed, first by the Witenagemot, then the Acts of the Royal Council and, finally, from the 13th-century onwards, by Parliament regulating weights and measures.  It was the Weights and Measures Act of 1824, during the reign of George IV, that established Imperial Units. Most towns and counties had these made after this time.
