The English bergere chair, also sometimes referred to as a "tub" chair, is one of the few very, very comfortable - to modern sensibilities - one of the few comfortable antique chairs. This example, dating from the end of the 18th-century, is notable for its well-drawn shape. The back gently curving around and the downswept arms terminating to reeded hand-grips, above a shaped support; the legs highlighted with carved paterae above fluted and stop-fluted square tapering legs, all ending in brass cups and castors.
