George III Mahogany Dial Clock in a 'Tear Drop' case.  The white painted dial set within a removable hood section with turned wooden bezel. The 16 inch painted iron dial bears the signature  "Sam'l Sly / Norwich" in the upper dial below the twelve. The chapter ring has Roman and Arabic numerals. The ‘tear drop’ lower section with banded and line inlay. The  brass 8-day timepiece weight powered movement has an anchor escapement and long pendulum on a round iron pendulum rod with a brass faced bob and lead weight.

Tear drop cases are especially pleasing to the eye - and not entirely common.  As such they are slightly more expensive than plain dial clocks.  

Samuel Sly of Norwich is an interesting man.  In addition to being a clock and watchmaker, and retailer, he was a minister, and pastor, at St. Margaret's chapel in Norwich for more than thirty years, from 1809 until he retired in 1840. His shop was located, first at 64 Gildengate, Norwich but then relocated to White Lion Street, Norwich when the firm became Sly & Son in 1800. He died in 1842.
