George II Mahogany 'Bachelor's' Chest of Drawers
George II Mahogany 'Bachelor's' Chest of Drawers
These chests with folding tops have long been referred to as ‘bachelor’s’ chests. This is a modern term, and probably an antiques dealer’s term. The folding top was thought to provide a surface for the laying out of clothes. Some of these chests have drawers fitted for writing implements, inkwells & pounce pots. Some could have been for both purposes. This delightful little chest has a fold-over top which is supported on two pull-out lopers at the back.
The four full-width drawers, each of graduating depths, retain their original brass bail handles with solid backplates.
The drawer linings are close-grained wainscot oak, which is typical of what one sees in this early period of solid mahogany furniture.
All supported on the original bracket feet.
